Step-by-Step Collection Instructions
Take your time — a calm pace helps improve sample quality.
- Wash your hands in hot, soapy water. Dry thoroughly.
- Fill out your requisition form if you haven’t already.
- Apply the rubber band to your forearm like a tourniquet. It should be snug.
- Choose your puncture site — off-center on your middle or ring finger.
- Wipe the site with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
- Twist the cap off a lancet, press it firmly on your finger, and puncture the skin.
- Milk your finger gently to form a droplet of blood. Don’t squeeze too hard or continuously.
- Let a large droplet hang, then touch it to one of the circles on the card — without letting your finger touch the card.
- Fill all five circles completely. You may need to use a second lancet and finger.
Sample quality tip:
The blood should soak through to the back of the card.
After Collection
- Use a cotton ball to stop the bleeding and apply a bandage if needed.
- Let the blood spot card air dry overnight. Do not expose it to sunlight, heat, or humidity.
- Once dry, fold the cover over the blood spots.
- Place the card and your requisition form in the biohazard bag, then into the return envelope.
- Seal and mail.
Mailing note:
No postage is required if you’re mailing within the U.S.
